How to get to La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a picturesque town in the northern part of Costa Rica, which has become a true magnet for eco-tourism enthusiasts thanks to its proximity to the majestic Arenal Volcano. This resort offers an ideal balance between serene relaxation in hot springs and active adventures in the tropical jungles. You can reach this destination in various ways: from a quick flight on local airlines to a scenic drive by car or bus through the country's lush green hills.

The fastest way to reach this region is by air. The town is served by its own La Fortuna Airport (FON), which accepts domestic flights and charters, providing convenient connections to other parts of the country without long overland journeys.

If a direct flight is unavailable, travellers often choose to fly into major neighbouring hubs, such as San Jose or Liberia, located less than 100 km away. Additionally, Tambor can be considered as a transit point, from where it is easy to continue the journey to the volcano by ground transport.

There is no railway station in the town of La Fortuna itself, as the railway network in Costa Rica has limited coverage and does not directly connect to this region. Travelling exclusively by train to the resort is not possible.

Tourists preferring combined routes are advised to travel to major transport hubs such as San Jose or Liberia. From there, it is most logical to continue the journey by bus or transfer, as rail connections between these cities and the Arenal Volcano zone are not established.

Bus services are a popular and budget-friendly option for those who wish to enjoy views of the country on the way to the volcano. The main route runs from the capital, San Jose; the bus covers the distance of 90 km in approximately 4.2 hours due to the mountainous terrain and stops.

Travelling by bus allows you to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere and does not require complex planning. Bus services are usually regular, but it is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, especially during the high season, or arrive at the station early.

Travelling by car offers maximum freedom and allows you to plan stops at picturesque locations on your own. The road from San Jose (about 131 km) will take approximately 2.8 hours, passing through the beautiful landscapes of the central part of the country.

It is also convenient to travel from Liberia or Tambor: a journey of 110–134 km will require about 2.5 hours of driving. The roads in this direction are generally scenic, but drivers should be attentive on winding sections.

To ensure your trip to La Fortuna leaves only pleasant impressions, it is worth considering a few features of the local lifestyle and climate in advance. This region is famous for its nature, so proper preparation will make your holiday comfortable and safe.

1. Clothing and Gear. The weather here is changeable: be sure to take a raincoat or a light waterproof jacket, as well as comfortable trekking shoes. Do not forget appropriate swimwear for visiting the hot springs.
2. Transport. For complete freedom of movement between waterfalls, parks, and the volcano, it is best to rent a car (preferably a 4x4). Taxis are available but can be expensive for frequent trips.
3. Finances. The official currency is the colón, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Cards work in major hotels and restaurants; however, it is better to carry cash for smaller shops.
4. Health and Protection. The tropical sun is active even in cloudy weather—use cream with high SPF. Insect repellent is also mandatory, especially if you plan evening walks.
5. Language. The official language is Spanish. In the tourist zone, staff speak English well, but knowing basic phrases in Spanish will be appreciated by the locals.
6. Local Etiquette. Costa Ricans are very friendly and live by the motto "Pura Vida" (pure life). A smile and a polite greeting of "Hola" are customary when entering any establishment.
7. Safety. La Fortuna is a safe town, but one should not leave valuables in plain sight in the car at unguarded parking lots near attractions.
