Since Zhengzhou Shangjie Airport (HSJ) is located in the Shangjie District, approximately 40 kilometres west of Zhengzhou city centre, planning your trip requires special attention. It is important to remember that this is a general aviation airfield: standard "airport express" trains or shuttles tied to scheduled flight timetables do not run here. The main flow of visitors is observed during the air show, when special temporary routes may be launched.
Taxi and Transfer
For an international tourist, a taxi is the most reliable and comfortable way to get to the airfield. Since public transport to the suburbs can be difficult to navigate without knowledge of the Chinese language, booking a car via apps (such as DiDi) or through the hotel concierge will save a lot of time.
- Travel Time: A trip from the centre of Zhengzhou (Erqi Square area or East Railway Station) will take from 50 to 70 minutes depending on traffic.
- Cost: The estimated price of the trip is 100–150 Chinese Yuan (CNY). It is recommended to have the name of the airport written in Chinese characters to show the driver.
Public Transport
There is no direct metro line to the airport entrance yet, but Zhengzhou's transport network is developing rapidly. The most budget-friendly, yet labour-intensive option is a combined route.
First, you need to get to the western part of the city. You can use the metro (heading towards Shangjie District) or a high-speed train to the Zhengzhou West (Zhengzhouxi) railway station. From the station to the airfield, about 15–20 km remain, which is best covered by a local taxi. Intercity buses also run between the bus stations of Zhengzhou and Shangjie District, but their schedules and route numbers change frequently, so this method is suitable only for experienced travellers.
Car Rental and Parking
Travelling by rental car gives maximum freedom. The road to Shangjie District runs along modern wide highways (specifically, the G310 highway). On ordinary days, there is plenty of parking space on the airfield territory. However, during the Zhengzhou Air Show, parking zones can be overcrowded, and organisers often arrange park-and-ride facilities with shuttles.
Important to know: International Driving Permits (IDP) are not valid in China. To rent a car, you must obtain a temporary Chinese driving licence. Otherwise, it is better to rent a car with a driver.
Alternative Airports in the Region
If your goal is to arrive in the region via a regular commercial flight, you should look for tickets not to Shangjie, but to the province's main international hub — Zhengzhou Xinzheng Airport. It is located approximately 63 km from the Shangjie airfield and receives flights from all over the world.
Also, for travelling around Henan province and neighbouring regions, you can consider other air harbours:
- Luoyang Beijiao Airport in the city of Luoyang (about 82 km from Shangjie) — an excellent option for those wishing to visit the famous Longmen Grottoes.
- Changzhi Airport (156 km) — for trips to the north.
- Anyang Hongqiqu Airport in Anyang (157 km).
- Linfen Qiaoli Airport (206 km).
