Overview

Taishan is characterized by a humid subtropical climate, which ensures warm and comfortable weather throughout most of the year. In this region of China, two main periods clearly stand out: a long, hot and humid summer lasting from May to September, and a mild, relatively dry winter in December and January.

Even during the coolest months, temperatures here rarely drop to extremes, staying consistently above freezing. The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—delight tourists with gradual and pleasant changes in temperature, making the city an attractive destination almost any time of year, provided you account for the rainy season.

The overall character of the weather can be described as tropical: the intense sun of the summer months gives way to pleasant coolness and dryness in winter. These are ideal conditions for those who want to explore the region's unique culture while avoiding harsh frosts or exhausting heat.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Taishan is notable for its stability and lack of frost. The annual range of average temperatures varies from +15.7°C in the coldest month, January, to +28.9°C in July. The summer heat is most noticeable from June to August, when daytime highs often reach +31.6°C, creating a true tropical summer atmosphere in this part of China.

Winter months are very mild: in December and January, daytime temperatures hover around +20°C, dropping to a comfortable +12...+13°C at night. The spring period is characterized by rapid warming—as early as March, the average temperature rises to +21°C, and by May it reaches a nearly summer-like +26.7°C.

An important feature of the local climate is the daily temperature fluctuations. In winter and spring, the difference between daytime warmth and nighttime cool can be 7–8°C. In summer, due to high humidity and cloud cover, this difference becomes less noticeable, and the warmth is felt almost around the clock.

Precipitation

Taishan features a pronounced rainy season that coincides with the summer months. Precipitation peaks between May and September. During this time, humidity rises significantly, and the number of rainy days in June and August can reach 25–26 per month. Summer precipitation in China usually takes the form of intense downpours, which are often short-lived.

The winter period, by contrast, is considered the dry season. In December and January, rain is a rarity, and the amount of precipitation is minimal. Snow is completely uncharacteristic for this part of the country, so tourists need not worry about snowfall or icy roads.

In spring, starting from March, the frequency of precipitation gradually increases to 14–15 days per month. However, light drizzle or mild rain predominates during this time, posing no serious obstacle to long walks. Autumn, especially October and November, brings a long-awaited decrease in humidity and establishes mostly clear and stable weather.

Packing Tips

When packing for Taishan, it is best to follow the principle of layering, especially if your trip is planned for winter or spring. For cool evenings from December to February, be sure to bring a light jacket, windbreaker, or warm sweater. In summer, when temperatures in China often rise above +30°C, the foundation of your wardrobe should be clothing made from natural, "breathable" fabrics like cotton or linen.

Given the nature of the wet season, an umbrella or a high-quality raincoat will be your indispensable companions from May to September. Don't forget reliable waterproof footwear to stay comfortable during sudden tropical downpours. In the spring and autumn months, light trousers, T-shirts, and a thin sweater for the evening will suffice.

Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are essential year-round in this region, as the sun remains strong even on cloudy days. And, of course, don't forget the most comfortable shoes for sightseeing, as exploring the attractions will require a lot of time on your feet.
