How to get to Copiapo

Getting There: Introduction

Copiapo is a remarkable oasis city located in the very heart of the arid Atacama Desert. This destination attracts travellers with its unique charm, harmoniously blending rich historical heritage with the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscapes. The capital of the Atacama region is renowned for its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere, serving as the ideal base for exploring the natural wonders of northern Chile.

The history of the city is inextricably linked to the development of the mining industry. It was here in the 19th century that the famous silver rush began, transforming Copiapo into one of the most prosperous centres of the country. Strolling through the streets, one can notice echoes of that era in the neoclassical architecture and monuments, while the central square, Plaza de Armas, adorned with century-old pepper trees and marble statues, is rightfully considered one of the most picturesque in the country.

For tourists, a journey to Copiapo opens the doors to breathtaking adventures. The city serves as a key transport hub and starting point for expeditions to the pristine white beaches of the Pacific Ocean, the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, or the foothills of the world's highest volcano, Ojos del Salado. Furthermore, it is in the vicinity of this city that one can witness the rare natural phenomenon of the "Flowering Desert," when, after the rains, the lifeless sands are covered with a carpet of vibrant flowers.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach Copiapo is by air. The main air gateway serving this region is the Desierto de Atacama Airport. Direct flights regularly arrive here from Santiago and several other major cities in Chile.

The airport is located approximately 50 kilometres from the city, near the coast. Thanks to good transport links, the journey to the centre by taxi or transfer usually takes no more than an hour. The modern terminal possesses all the necessary infrastructure for comfortable arrivals and waiting.

As an alternative option, one might consider flying into neighbouring major hubs, such as La Serena or Antofagasta. These cities are located at a significant distance; however, this route is often chosen by travellers planning a grand road trip through the Atacama Desert and along the Pan-American Highway.

Traveller Tips

Preparing for a trip to Copiapo requires taking into account the peculiarities of the desert climate and local infrastructure. To ensure your visit to this unique region of Chile is as comfortable and surprise-free as possible, we have compiled several useful recommendations.

  1. Clothing and Essentials: The climate in the Atacama Desert is one of contrasts. During the day, the sun burns relentlessly, while after sunset, the temperature drops sharply. The best strategy is to dress in layers: bring light t-shirts made of natural fabrics, but be sure to pack a warm fleece jacket and a windbreaker for the evenings. A hat, high-quality sunglasses, and sunscreen with high SPF are mandatory at any time of the year.
  2. Transport: Within the city limits, it is convenient to move around by "colectivo" (shared taxis)—this is a cheap and popular method, with cars running on fixed routes. However, for trips to Bahia Inglesa beaches or national parks, it is better to rent a car, preferably with high clearance, to feel confident on unpaved roads.
  3. Finance: The national currency is the Chilean Peso. Cards are accepted in large supermarkets, hotels, and restaurants, but cash will be required in small shops, kiosks, and markets. It is better to exchange Dollars or Euros at official exchange bureaus (Casas de Cambio) in the city centre; street money changers should be avoided for safety reasons.
  4. Health and Safety: Tap water in the city undergoes purification, but due to high mineralisation, it may have a specific taste and cause discomfort to an unaccustomed system, so buying bottled water is recommended. The city is generally safe, but one should keep an eye on personal belongings in crowded places and not leave valuables in the car in plain sight.
  5. Communication: The main language of communication is Spanish. English is not understood everywhere, mostly only at the reception desks of large hotels. We strongly recommend learning a few basic phrases of greeting and gratitude, as well as downloading an offline translator on your smartphone for communication in shops and taxis.
  6. Local Etiquette: Chileans are open and friendly people. It is customary to greet others when entering a shop or lift. In restaurants, a tip (propina) of 10% is often included in the "pre-check" but is paid voluntarily—the waiter usually asks if you wish to include it in the bill.
  7. What to Avoid: Do not embark on long journeys through the desert without preparation. Never drive off marked trails onto the sand if you lack experience and a suitable vehicle, and always have a reserve of water and fuel, as petrol stations may be located at great distances from one another.
  8. Additional Tip: Copiapo is a historic centre of the mining industry. For an authentic souvenir, look for items made from local minerals and semi-precious stones, which can be found at artisan markets or in specialised shops.

By following these simple practical tips, you can avoid minor domestic inconveniences and fully focus on exploring the amazing landscapes and rich history of this hospitable oasis.
