Cairu Airport (Lorenço) is a small air harbour serving mostly private flights and air taxis delivering tourists to the popular archipelago and resort of Morro de São Paulo. Since the airport is located on Tinharé Island, logistics here have unique features that differ from the standard urban conditions of mainland Brazil.
It is important to understand that on most of the island's territory, including tourist zones, private motor vehicle traffic is prohibited. This makes conventional methods of transport, such as taxis or car rentals, unavailable in the classic sense.
Transfers and Specialised Taxis
This is the primary and practically the only way to reach the Lorenço runway in comfort. Authorised off-road vehicles (usually Land Rovers) and minibuses from local travel agencies operate from hotels and villages (especially from the Second and Third Beaches of Morro de São Paulo).
- Where to find: The "Receptivo" station, located behind the Second Beach, often serves as a meeting point.
- Travel time: The journey from the central tourist zone to the airport takes about 15–20 minutes along dirt roads.
- Cost: The transfer price is often fixed and may range from 30 to 50 Brazilian Reais per person, but it is best to verify current rates on site.
Public Transport (Buses, Trains, Metro)
In the town of Cairu and on Tinharé Island, there are absolutely no metros, trains, or regular city buses. The specific island landscape and environmental restrictions preclude the development of such infrastructure. Movement around the island is done either on foot or via the specialised transport mentioned above.
Car Rental and Parking
It is impossible to rent a car to drive directly to Lorenço Airport, as private transport is not permitted on the island. If you are travelling by rental car across the mainland part of the state of Bahia, you will have to leave it at a guarded car park in the city of Valença (the nearest port on the mainland) or at the Atracadouro Bom Jardim terminal, and then cross to the island by boat.
Alternative Airports Nearby
Since Cairu Airport accepts a limited number of small aircraft, most travellers fly into the region's major international hubs and then reach Cairu by catamaran or small aviation. The nearest major hub is Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport in Salvador, located approximately 82 km away in a straight line (though the journey by land and water will take longer). Direct air taxis depart from here to the Lorenço runway; the flight takes about 25 minutes.
Other options for arriving in the region include:
- Ilhéus/Bahia-Jorge Amado Airport (about 158 km) — convenient for those planning a trip along the southern coast of the state.
- Vitória da Conquista Airport (266 km) — located significantly further inland.
- Coronel Horácio de Mattos Airport in Lençóis (275 km) — the gateway to the Chapada Diamantina National Park.
- Aracaju Airport (333 km).
Useful Tip: If you are departing from Lorenço Airport, book your transfer in advance through your hotel or pousada. Due to the lack of regular "on-demand" taxis on the roads, searching for transport spontaneously may lead to missing your flight.
