The history of this place began in the late 1970s. Construction of the first phase of the Eastern Bazaar was completed in 1982, and the grand opening was attended by Heydar Aliyev. Before the complex appeared, a small spontaneous market and a kindergarten occupied this site along the former Moscow Prospect (now Khatai Prospect). The architects set an ambitious goal: to create the first market in Baku since the 19th century designed entirely in the Oriental style, harmoniously combining medieval architectural traditions with modern construction technologies.

In the 1980s, the bazaar enjoyed incredible popularity and was even nominated for the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture. After a period of decline in the 90s, a large-scale reconstruction was initiated in 2018.
