Overview

The climate in El Bolsón can be described as temperate and cool, with distinct seasonal changes. Thanks to its location in a mountain valley, the town enjoys a unique microclimate that is generally milder than the surrounding highlands, yet it still retains the characteristic freshness of Patagonia.

Summer, which lasts from December to February, is the most comfortable time to visit. During this period, the weather is warm and relatively dry, with daytime temperatures averaging 18-20°C. This is the ideal season for long walks and outdoor activities, as the number of cloudy days is minimal.

Winter (June to August), on the contrary, brings cold and high humidity. The average temperature during these months hovers around 0°C, often dropping below freezing at night. Travelers should be prepared for frequent precipitation: although the total volume is small, the number of wet days in winter is very high (up to 20-22 days per month), often appearing as drizzle or snow.

Temperature

Climatic conditions in El Bolsón are characterized by pronounced seasonality, typical of the Patagonian Andes. The warmest period of the year is the summer months — January and February — when the average maximum temperature reaches a comfortable 18–20°C. Summer here can be described as mild and pleasant: sweltering heat is extremely rare, creating ideal conditions for trekking and outdoor walks.

With the arrival of winter, which lasts from June to August, the weather becomes truly cold. The lowest temperatures are recorded in June and July, when daily averages hover around zero, and at night the air cools down to -2...-3°C. During the day, the air warms up very little, rarely exceeding 3–4°C, so high-quality warm gear is essential for a winter trip to this region of Argentina.

Travelers should also consider significant temperature fluctuations throughout the day, especially during the warm season. Even if the sun warms the air to pleasant levels during the day, it becomes noticeably fresh after sunset. For example, in the height of summer, the difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum can be more than 10 degrees, so having a warm sweater or jacket will be useful even on the sunniest days.

Precipitation

Precipitation in El Bolsón is unevenly distributed throughout the year, showing pronounced seasonality. The summer months (January and February) are the driest: during this period, the amount of moisture is minimal — only about 2 mm — and the number of days with precipitation ranges from 7 to 9. This makes summer the most favorable time for tourism and outdoor activities in this region of Argentina.

As autumn arrives, the frequency of precipitation begins to rise, peaking in the winter period. The "wettest" month in terms of the number of gloomy days is June, when precipitation can be observed for up to 22 days a month. Considering that average temperatures in June and July drop to zero and negative values (minimum to -2.9°C), rain during this time of year often turns to snow, especially at night and in the early morning hours.

Despite the high frequency of precipitation in winter, its intensity remains relatively low. The maximum volume of moisture is recorded in June (about 10 mm), which indicates that heavy downpours are rare here. Rather, the local climate is characterized by a light but frequent drizzle or light snow, creating a unique atmosphere during the cold season.

Packing Tips

When heading to El Bolsón, it is important to remember the variability of Patagonian weather and stick to the principle of layering your clothes. Even in the height of summer (January-February), when daytime temperatures rise to a comfortable +18...+20°C, nights remain cool, and the thermometer can drop to +7°C. Therefore, your suitcase should definitely include both T-shirts and lightweight trousers, as well as a warm fleece jumper or sweater for evening strolls. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses: the mountain sun here is very intense.

If your trip falls during the autumn-winter period (May to September), prepare for cold weather and frequent precipitation. Average winter temperatures hover around 0°C, and the number of wet days increases significantly. You will need high-quality thermal underwear, a warm windproof jacket, a hat, and gloves. Be sure to bring a reliable raincoat or a waterproof membrane windbreaker, as an umbrella can be impractical in gusty winds.

Regardless of the season, the most important part of your wardrobe should be comfortable and durable footwear. For exploring the picturesque surroundings and mountain trails of Argentina, broken-in trekking boots with good grip and water resistance are ideal. We also recommend bringing a small backpack for water and personal items so your hands remain free during excursions.
