Travelling through Saurimo (Catoca) Airport (CTV), which serves an important economic region of Angola, has its own specifics. Despite its status as a regional hub, strict rules apply here, and to ensure your experience is positive, it is worth preparing for certain nuances in advance.
It is recommended to arrive at the airport at least 1.5–2 hours before departure. Although the terminal may seem small, check-in and luggage screening procedures are often conducted manually and with particular thoroughness. Allowing extra time will enable you to check in your luggage and pass all necessary security checks without rushing.
At the check-in and security control stages, keep your passport and tickets handy. Security staff may ask you to present documents several times. Be prepared for requests to remove shoes, belts, or outerwear, as well as for a detailed inspection of hand luggage. Polite and calm behaviour will help speed up this process.
When choosing a seat on the plane, we advise booking a window seat. Flights over the Lunda Sul province offer impressive views of the African savannah and winding rivers. If the flight is operated by a small aircraft, seats in the front of the cabin generally provide a lower noise level and greater comfort.
Rules for carrying hand luggage are standard but strictly controlled. Liquids over 100 ml must be checked in. Sharp and cutting objects are prohibited in the cabin. Pay special attention to electronics: power banks and spare lithium batteries can only be carried in hand luggage; they are prohibited in checked baggage.
If you have a flight with a connection (most often via Luanda), allow at least 3–4 hours for the transfer. Flights at regional airports may be delayed due to weather conditions or technical reasons, so a sufficient time buffer is necessary for a peaceful continuation of your journey.
Customs control in this region requires special attention. The province is known for diamond and mineral mining, so the export of any rough stones or geological specimens without special certificates and permits is strictly prohibited. If you have purchased stone souvenirs, ensure you have receipts and documents to avoid problems.
To save time and money, bring a light snack and an empty water bottle (you can fill it after security if drinking water is available), as the café selection may be limited. Be sure to carry small denomination cash (Kwanza), as card payment terminals may not work, and cash will be useful for small expenses.
In case of a flight delay, it is recommended to stay within sight of the boarding gate. Information screens may be absent, and announcements are often made vocally by airport staff. Download a book, music, or a movie to your phone in advance, as Wi-Fi may be unavailable or work intermittently.
