Baggage

Baggage rules at SpiceJet depend on the selected fare and flight destination, so travelers are encouraged to check details during booking. As a rule, for most domestic flights, the norms are fairly standardized to ensure fast aircraft turnaround times.

Hand Luggage: Passengers can take one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to 7 kg. The bag's dimensions must not exceed 115 cm (total of three dimensions: 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm). In addition to the main hand luggage, a small lady's handbag or a laptop bag is permitted.

Checked Baggage: On domestic flights, the standard free baggage allowance in economy class is usually 15 kg. For SpiceMax fares or international destinations, these allowances may be increased. Each piece of baggage must be securely packed and have a tag with the owner's contact information.

Excess Baggage: If the weight of your suitcases exceeds the set limits, an additional payment at the airline's current rates will be required. It is recommended to pay for extra baggage in advance via the official SpiceJet website — this is significantly cheaper than doing so at the airport check-in counter.

Special Items: The airline accepts sports equipment (such as golf clubs or skis) and musical instruments for carriage, but a fixed service fee may apply. Baby strollers and infant seats are usually carried free of charge in the cargo hold.

Prohibited Items: Explosive substances, flammable liquids, high-power lithium batteries, and sharp objects are strictly prohibited in both checked and hand luggage. Before your trip, be sure to check the current list of dangerous goods on the carrier's website to avoid delays during screening.

Packing Tips: Use bright covers or ribbons to quickly identify your luggage on the airport carousel. Try to distribute weight evenly and do not put valuables, documents, or medications in checked baggage — always keep them with you in the cabin.

Pet Rules

Pet Transportation by SpiceJet

SpiceJet understands how important it is for travelers not to be separated from their pets and offers transportation services for domestic animals. Rules for carriage may vary depending on the type of aircraft and the specific route.

Carriage in the Cabin

  • Permitted Animals: Only small dogs and cats are allowed in the cabin on certain domestic flights operated by Boeing aircraft.
  • Weight and Size: The maximum weight of the animal including the carrier must not exceed 7 kg. The container dimensions must allow it to be placed under the seat in front of you.
  • Restrictions: On flights operated by Q400 aircraft, carrying pets in the cabin is generally prohibited.

Carriage in the Cargo Hold

  • Container Requirements: Animals weighing more than 7 kg are transported in a specially conditioned cargo hold. The container must meet IATA standards, be durable, ventilated, and have a secure lock.
  • Conditions: The passenger is responsible for providing the animal with sufficient water and food for the duration of the flight.

Required Documents

  • An international veterinary passport.
  • A health certificate (Form No. 1) issued by a licensed veterinarian no earlier than 72 hours before departure.
  • A rabies vaccination certificate.
  • For international flights, additional permits and quarantine certificates may be required.

Cost and Preparation

Pet transportation is a paid service and is not included in the free baggage allowance. Rates depend on the animal's weight and flight distance. We recommend starting preparations several weeks in advance: get your pet used to the carrier, do not feed it for 4–6 hours before departure, and consult a veterinarian regarding sedatives.

Restrictions

  • Brachycephalic Breeds: Due to their respiratory structure, the carriage of pugs, bulldogs, and Persian cats may be restricted or prohibited, as they do not tolerate pressure changes and stress well.
  • Climatic Conditions: During periods of extreme heat in India, the airline may introduce temporary bans on transporting animals in the cargo hold for their safety.

To guarantee a space for your pet, you must contact the SpiceJet call center at least 48 hours before departure. We recommend always checking the current rules directly before booking.

SpiceJet is not part of global alliances, but the loyalty program provides excellent conditions for those who frequently fly within India and across the region.

Services

SpiceJet offers a modern level of comfort, combining the affordability of a low-cost carrier with a wide range of additional services. Various service options are available to passengers, allowing them to tailor the flight to their needs and budget.

Classes of Service: The main class is Economy, where passengers are offered ergonomic seats. However, the carrier's primary pride is SpiceMax. This is a premium economy option that includes seats with extra legroom (up to 15 cm more than standard), priority check-in at a dedicated counter, expedited baggage delivery, and complimentary hot meals.

In-flight Amenities: The seat configuration on Boeing 737 and Bombardier Q400 aircraft is designed for maximum efficiency. On most flights, SpicEngage is available — a free entertainment system accessible via Wi-Fi on your own gadgets. It includes movies, TV shows, games, and the ability to order food and drinks directly from your smartphone screen.

Dining: The SpiceJet menu features a wide selection of Indian and international cuisine. Passengers can pre-order hot meals, sandwiches, or snacks via the website. Special attention is paid to special dietary requirements: vegetarian, vegan, and other options meeting religious or medical requirements are available.

Special Services: The airline cares about the comfort of all categories of travelers. For families with children, unaccompanied minor services are provided, and for passengers with reduced mobility, wheelchairs and boarding assistance are available. It is also possible to book a Meet and Assist service for faster processing of airport formalities.

Destinations

SpiceJet's flight geography covers almost every corner of India, offering convenient connections between major metropolises and popular tourist centers. The hub in Delhi serves as the primary connection point of the route network, with dozens of daily flights departing from there.

In addition to its extensive domestic network, SpiceJet is actively developing international destinations, linking Indian cities with key points in the Middle East and South Asia. The most popular routes include flights to major business centers and popular resorts, making the airline an excellent choice for both business travelers and vacationers.

Booking Tips

Booking SpiceJet tickets directly through the airline's official channels often allows you to save money and gain access to exclusive services. To find the best price, it is recommended to plan your trip 4–6 weeks before departure. Traditionally, the most favorable fares are available for flights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while costs increase significantly on weekends and holidays.

The airline regularly holds sales and promotions, such as the "Red Hot Sale," where discounts can reach substantial amounts. To avoid missing special offers, it's worth subscribing to the newsletter or following SpiceJet's official social media accounts. Special discounts for students, seniors, and military personnel are also frequently available.

Online check-in opens 48 hours before and closes 60 minutes before a domestic flight's departure. We strongly recommend checking in online: it not only saves time at the airport but also gives you the opportunity to choose your desired seat before the best options are taken.

When selecting a seat, look for the SpiceMax option. For a small additional fee, you will get a seat with extra legroom, priority check-in and boarding, and free meals on board. If you are traveling in a large group, try to book seats at the same time to ensure you sit together.

Don't forget about travel insurance. SpiceJet offers insurance options that cover flight cancellations, medical expenses, and lost baggage. However, it's always useful to compare these conditions with programs from third-party insurance companies. The airline's mobile app is an indispensable assistant: you can not only buy a ticket but also receive real-time flight status notifications.

History

The history of SpiceJet began in 2004 when entrepreneur Ajay Singh acquired the assets of the former airline ModiLuft with the goal of creating an efficient and affordable low-cost carrier in India. The airline operated its first commercial flight in May 2005 on the Delhi–Mumbai route, marking a new era of budget travel in the country.

During its first decade, SpiceJet grew rapidly, expanding its route network and increasing flight frequencies. A major milestone was the introduction of the point-to-point model, which allowed the airline to minimize costs and offer passengers record-low prices. Despite periods of economic turbulence, the airline has always found ways to transform and improve operational efficiency.

The airline's fleet has undergone significant evolution: starting with the classic Boeing 737, SpiceJet later added Bombardier Q400 regional aircraft to its fleet. This allowed the carrier to fly into smaller airports with short runways, opening access to unique tourist locations in the heart of India.

International expansion was a logical step in its development — the airline launched flights to Dubai, Colombo, and other cities in the region. In recent years, SpiceJet has actively invested in modern technology, becoming the first Indian low-cost carrier to offer broadband internet on board, and is developing its cargo division, SpiceXpress, which has become one of the leaders in the country's logistics market.
