Baggage Guidelines and Allowances
Air Niugini offers a baggage policy designed to accommodate the diverse needs of travelers, whether they are island-hopping within Papua New Guinea or flying internationally to major hubs like Singapore and Hong Kong. Understanding these allowances before you pack will ensure a smoother journey through the airport.
Carry-On Baggage Allowance
For the safety and comfort of all passengers, cabin baggage is strictly regulated. All carry-on items must fit in the overhead locker or under the seat in front of you.
- Economy Class: Passengers are permitted one piece of carry-on luggage with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs).
- Business Class: Travelers enjoy an increased allowance, typically permitting two pieces with a combined weight not exceeding 14kg (30lbs).
- Personal Item: In addition to the main carry-on bag, you may bring one small personal item such as a laptop bag, handbag, or camera case.
- Dimensions: The total dimensions (Length + Width + Height) of any carry-on bag must not exceed 114cm (approximately 50 x 30 x 20 cm).
Note: On smaller regional aircraft (such as the Dash 8 series) used for some domestic routes, overhead storage is limited. In these cases, larger carry-on items may need to be gate-checked.
Checked Baggage Limits
Air Niugini operates on a "Weight Concept" for most of its network, meaning you are not limited by the number of bags, but by the total weight. Allowances differ significantly between domestic and international sectors.
Domestic Flights (within Papua New Guinea)
- Economy Class: 16kg
- Business Class: 20kg
International Flights
Allowances for international travel are generally more generous, facilitating long-haul connections to destinations like Manila, Sydney, and Brisbane.
- Economy Class: Typically 30kg.
- Business Class: Typically 40kg.
Important: No single piece of luggage can weigh more than 32kg due to occupational health and safety regulations. Any bag exceeding this weight must be repacked or sent as cargo.
Excess Baggage and Prepaid Options
If you plan to travel with more than your free allowance, Air Niugini offers options to manage the extra weight without breaking the bank. Excess baggage is charged per kilogram.
- Prepaid Baggage: You can purchase excess baggage in 5kg blocks (up to a maximum of 45kg) through the airline's website or sales offices. Purchasing in advance is highly recommended as it can save you approximately 20% compared to paying at the airport check-in counter.
Special Baggage: Sports and Music
Papua New Guinea is a premier destination for diving and adventure, and the airline supports this with specific allowances for sports equipment.
- Sports Equipment (Dive/Surf/Golf): Air Niugini offers an additional 15kg free allowance for scuba diving gear, surfboards, or golf clubs on both international and domestic flights. This is separate from your standard checked baggage.
- Musical Instruments: Small instruments may be carried on board if they fit within the carry-on dimensions. Larger instruments, such as cellos or guitars, should be checked in a hard-shell case. For very large or valuable instruments, you may need to book an extra seat or ship them as cargo.
Restricted and Prohibited Items
To ensure flight safety, the following restrictions apply:
- Dangerous Goods: Explosives, flammable liquids, gases, and corrosives are strictly prohibited in both checked and carry-on luggage.
- Lithium Batteries: Spare loose lithium batteries (e.g., power banks) must be packed in carry-on luggage only and never in checked bags.
- Valuables: Do not pack cash, jewelry, laptops, or important documents in your checked luggage. These should always remain with you in the cabin.
- Liquids (International): For flights to destinations like Honiara or Singapore, liquids, aerosols, and gels in carry-on must be in containers of 100ml or less, placed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag.
Tips for Efficient Packing
- Weigh Before You Go: Use a portable luggage scale to check your bag's weight at home to avoid surprise fees at the airport.
- Label Everything: Attach durable tags with your name, phone number, and email address to the outside and inside of your bags.
- Pack Smart for Connections: If you are transferring from an international flight to a domestic PNG connection, remember that the domestic allowance (16kg) is lower than the international one. You may need to purchase prepaid excess baggage for the domestic leg if your bags are heavy.
