Where to go in December
“Strike while the iron is hot, and plan your December vacation in November.”
Guided by this motto, we've compiled a selection of budget-friendly and visa-free destinations, and also told you about cool options for relaxing at ski resorts and by the sea. Let's go!

Budget Destinations
Kaliningrad Region
November is a great time to buy flights to Kaliningrad for the beginning of winter. In December, you can visit all the exhibitions that interest you and admire the architecture. Start with the exhibition halls in the Zakheim Gates, where contemporary art is presented. You should also definitely listen to the organ in the 14th-century Cathedral. And, of course, take a stroll through Svetlogorsk: cozy buildings, towers with weather vanes, and fresh air are the best companions for any trip. In general, returning from Kaliningrad to Moscow, you will be 100% rested and inspired.
Karelia
This is where you'll find plenty to do! If you're wondering what to do in Karelia in winter, rest assured — you'll be able to entertain yourself to the fullest here. Firstly, in December, there's already snow, which means a special atmosphere is guaranteed. Secondly, excursions to Kizhi and Petrozavodsk are a must for cultural enrichment. And to top it all off — banyas, spas, and delicious food. In short, definitely plan a trip to Karelia.

Tatarstan
Dropping everything and going to Kazan is also a great decision. At the beginning of winter, you'll find excellent weather here, allowing you to visit many attractions. We recommend not missing the Kul Sharif Mosque, taking a photo with the Söyembikä Tower in the background, and trying echpochmaks. Kazan is also home to many creative people, which means there's no shortage of exhibitions and cool clothing stores.
Nizhny Novgorod Region
Nizhny Novgorod could well compete with St. Petersburg for the title of Russia's gastronomic capital. Gastronomic tours are often held in Nizhny, so coming here in December for the most delicious food is a good idea. Of course, if this is accompanied by walks along the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Bolshaya Pokrovskaya, and Rozhdestvenskaya streets, then the digestion of dishes will be excellent. All extra calories will go into your charisma, we guarantee it!
Where to go to the sea in December
Cuba
In December, the season of pleasant weather and warm water begins in Cuba, so it will be easy to swim in the Caribbean Sea and walk around the island. It's especially interesting to observe the locals preparing for the Christmas holidays: they decorate houses with garlands and start selling cute souvenirs. We also note that the beaches of Varadero, Cayo Coco, and Cayo Guillermo are excellent for diving. So, if you wanted to try a new sport, come to Cuba.
Seychelles
Let's head to the islands of East Africa! In December, the hot season begins in Seychelles, lasting until May. So, a tip for heat lovers: take a closer look at Seychelles. Here you can find yourself surfing, have a great time partying, or simply relax on the shores of the Indian Ocean. The islands boast incredibly picturesque flora and rare fauna that you won't find anywhere else. We recommend going with friends to have photos and unforgettable vacation memories.
Thailand
Going to Thailand in December is not only for the warm weather but also for a major holiday — Constitution Day. During this time, large-scale parades and processions are held throughout the country. It's best to choose islands in the Andaman Sea for your vacation, such as Phi Phi or Koh Lanta: there are no torrential rains here in winter.

Indonesia
Many know Indonesia because of the fabulous Bali. Feel free to come to Bali for meditation, riding bikes, eating the freshest seafood, and surfing. If this atmosphere has tired you out, go to Flores Island with its incredible nature or to Java to relax by waterfalls or climb Mount Patuha. When planning to conquer Indonesia, don't forget to set aside $35 — upon arrival, you will need to obtain a 30-day visa.
Traveling in Russia
Kamchatka
Perhaps, going to Kamchatka in winter is definitely worth it, at least for contemplating snow-covered volcanoes. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean softens the climate, so you will certainly have the opportunity to see all the attractions that interest you. Tourists usually have this plan: half a day enjoying the grandeur of the local nature, and the other half — swimming in thermal springs and trying the best seafood. To summarize: a great location for a trip in December.

Moscow
An hour of unforgettable flight to Moscow, and you're already in the capital! This is definitely a place where you can roam freely without bumping into huge crowds of tourists: here you have Red Square, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Armory Chamber. Fans of modern architecture, futurism, and urbanism will also enjoy the capital. A must-visit is the Moscow Zoo. Even if you came to relax without children, no one can resist the charming llamas and tigers.
Dagestan
Dagestan is a place where you can find snow and simultaneously take a break from it. The fact is that the Caspian Sea coast has warmer weather, while in the mountains, there is already snow at this time. It's up to you to decide what suits you best. However, one thing is hard for everyone to resist: delicious food and communication with hospitable locals. Be sure to go see the Sulak Canyon — its blue waters contrast beautifully with the white snow.
Murmansk Region
One of the most popular winter destinations is the Murmansk Region. The first thing people come here for is the Northern Lights. You can go hunting for this natural phenomenon on your own, but we recommend taking a tour with knowledgeable guides. The second must-do is to visit the village of Teriberka to see the cemetery of abandoned ships and walk along the 'Dragon Eggs' beach by the Barents Sea. Just don't forget to dress warmly and bring a thermos with tea.
Family vacation in December
Saint Petersburg
St. Petersburg in winter is a special pleasure. You can stroll through the Northern Capital for hours, admiring the city from a coffee shop during breaks. Upon arrival, first plan visits to the Russian Museum and the Hermitage to get cultured with your children, and then buy pyshki with powdered sugar. What's not to love about such a heavenly vacation?
Veliky Ustyug
You've definitely heard of Veliky Ustyug, but you might not know where Ded Moroz's (Father Frost's) homeland is located. It's in the Vologda Region. The journey from Vologda will take about six hours, but what an experience! Not only children will enjoy Ded Moroz's estate: its territory includes a health and wellness center, cafes, and even a Fairy Tale Path, at the end of which there's a wishing well. In short, it's an excellent place for the inner child of even the most seasoned parents.
Kostroma
An option for parents who want to dedicate the entire December to a fairy tale. It is in Kostroma that Snegurochka's (Snow Maiden's) tower is located. True, you'll have to travel about 700 km from Veliky Ustyug.
Besides Ded Moroz's granddaughter herself, you will be met by Domovoy, Domovikha, and Bayun the Cat, who will accompany you to the Ice Room and tell you the history of Kostroma, Snegurochka's homeland. Be sure to also visit the Cheese Museum and take a stroll around Susaninskaya Square.

Sochi
If you didn't manage to buy a ticket to Sochi in summer, now is the time to do it and come here in December. At the beginning of winter, there won't be the scorching heat that accompanied tourists in summer: the temperature stays around +10 degrees Celsius. In general, Sochi is not as crowded in winter, and the air is fresher than ever. So there's no reason to refuse a trip here. Be sure to visit the Arboretum, the Botanical Garden, and the Olympic Park. Your child will be delighted!
Ski Resorts
Sheregesh
For Sheregesh, one of the main ski resorts, you'll need to fly to the Kemerovo Region, but it's definitely worth it. Four sectors for all types of riding, 16 slopes with varying difficulty levels, great instructors, and slopes covered with fluffy snow. Besides skiing itself, you can visit restaurants, banyas, and spas here. Of course, there are also places to stay, but remember that the price might seem steep: with the start of the season, prices will be accordingly high.

Khibiny
Coming to Khibiny in December, you can easily accomplish two winter tasks at once: see the Northern Lights and go skiing. However, one important fact must be considered: in the second half of the month, there is a polar night here, so you'll have to ski under artificial lighting. Khibiny has two popular complexes: Bolshoy Vudyavr and Kukisvumchorr. The first has 23 long slopes of varying difficulty. The second is more suitable for experienced athletes, so there are fewer people here.
Cheget
Cheget is a location for the most extreme athletes. The slopes of this resort in Prielbrusye are considered among the most challenging not only in Russia but also in Europe. Here you will find slopes up to 5 km long with an altitude difference of up to 1 km and obstacles. Beginners in skiing will find it difficult here, but they can easily go to the neighboring resort of Elbrus Azau. So, Cheget is a must-visit for those who are already experienced.
Visa-Free Destinations
Malaysia
You can spend almost the entire December in Malaysia, as the visa-free period here lasts 30 days. There are no direct flights from Russia, but you can get there with a layover. Enduring a long flight is worth it at least for the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur, where an abundance of tropical greenery and futuristic buildings meet. You can also head to the shores of the Andaman and South China Seas to try hiking and diving.

Turkey
December in Turkey exists to take a break from the abundance of tourists. You won't be able to swim, but going on excursions is definitely an option. The main thing is not to forget to bring an umbrella and a hoodie, because the air temperature is around +10–15 degrees Celsius.
You can stay in the country without a visa for up to 90 days within a six-month period. Additionally, when traveling to Turkey, keep in mind that your passport must be valid for at least 120 days from the date of entry into the country.
Serbia
Serbia is one of the most popular destinations for Russians in 2024. You can stay in the country without a visa for 30 days. During this time in December, you will definitely get a full rest: there are ski and spa resorts, as well as interesting cultural and historical attractions. In short, every traveler will find their own way to relax.
UAE
We conclude our selection with a flourish! At the beginning of winter, the UAE has very pleasant weather: the thermometer does not exceed +27 degrees Celsius. During the 90 days you can spend in the country without a visa, there is an opportunity to try various types of recreation. For example, swim in the Indian Ocean, go shopping at the largest shopping center, Dubai Mall, and celebrate the country's National Day on December 2nd. You can get to Dubai by flights from airlines Air Arabia, «Emirates», «Pobeda», «Azimuth».
We wish you a great start to winter and a fantastic rest with your loved ones before the New Year!
