What to see in Kazan
Let's grab flight tickets to Kazan! Let's try national Tatar fast food and rollerblading along the local Kremlin Embankment.
In the article, we've told you which attractions are a must-visit and what to see in Kazan in one day.

Architectural and Cultural Monuments
Kazan was founded over a thousand years ago. The capital of Tatarstan is a place rich in architectural wonders and monuments. Everywhere you look, you'll find an excellent backdrop for photos with friends.
Kazan Kremlin
The most important attraction in Kazan is a complex of historical structures from different eras: the Kazan Kremlin. It reflects the main milestones in the history of Tatarstan — from the Golden Horde period to its incorporation into the Russian state. The combination of Eastern and Western architectural traditions is embodied in the eclectic coexistence of Orthodox churches and a mosque, a Turkic tower, and the building of the provincial chancellery, built in a European style.

Suyumbike Tower
One of the most important monuments of the Kazan Kremlin is the Suyumbike Tower. It is often compared to the Leaning Tower of Pisa due to its appearance: like its Italian sister, the Suyumbike Tower «leans», deviating to the northeast. It is not reliably known when it was built, but due to its similarity to some Moscow constructions, historians believe it was erected at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Palace of Farmers
The Palace of Farmers, resembling one of the imperial palaces of Vienna, was built in the late 2000s, and its exterior appearance is still debated: some believe that the Austrian style in Kazan is inappropriate and does not resonate with the city's history, while others, on the contrary, appreciate the palace for its unusualness and quality of construction. A particular subject of debate is the bronze tree with lighting that imitates leaves.

Kremlin Embankment
If you love long walks, head here to stroll along the Kazanka River, sit in numerous cafes, and take some photos: from here, you can enjoy views of the Kremlin and the Palace of Farmers. Active recreation enthusiasts will enjoy rollerblading and cycling, and children will appreciate the carousels. In winter, a free ice rink is organized on the embankment — if you don't have skates with you, they will offer rentals here.
Ushkova House
Locals call the Ushkova House «a cake with whipped cream». This is due not only to the creamy shade of the facade but also to the abundance of decorative elements adorning the Baroque-style building. Bas-reliefs, arcature belts, pilasters — there's plenty for art history students to see here. The interiors of the house look even more impressive: inside, you can find oriental-style paintings, door handles in the shape of tiny dragons, and a Moorish smoking room. The windows are decorated with stained glass depicting flowers and mythical animals. Today, the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan is located here, so it's easy to get inside.
Kazan Family Center
The main wedding palace in the capital of Tatarstan. We're not suggesting you rush there to get married — the structure is interesting not so much for its purpose as for its appearance. From the outside, it resembles a real kazan — a cauldron for cooking. And in the evening, it's lit up as if there's truly a fire burning under the «kazan».

Museums and Galleries
For museum and gallery lovers, Kazan also has something to see. We didn't include classic museums, which are found in almost every city. Instead, we added super-exclusive places for which it's worth taking train tickets to Kazan.
Chak-Chak Museum
The Chak-Chak Museum is located in the old mansion of merchant Vafa Bigayev. Based on historical evidence, the everyday life of a typical Tatar house from the mid-19th century has been reconstructed here. If you book a spot in advance (the museum is very small and cannot accommodate many tourists), you will be given a tour: you'll learn about the history and recipe of the traditional Tatar delicacy and will definitely get to taste it. There is a shop at the museum where you can buy chak-chak.

Museum of Socialist Life
The Museum of Socialist Life houses an endless array of exhibits from the USSR era: musical instruments, dishes, postcards, watches, cameras, toys, and much more. All proceeds from ticket sales go towards finding and acquiring new exhibits. Currently, the museum occupies a space of 200 square meters, but you can help make it even larger simply by purchasing an admission ticket.
Old Tatar Settlement
The most authentic place in Kazan, where ancient mosques, Yunusovskaya Square, mansions of Tatar merchants and industrialists, and several madrasahs have been preserved, is the Old Tatar Settlement. Almost every pre-revolutionary house in the settlement is connected with the names of prominent Kazan figures — which is why the area holds immense significance for locals.

Zaitsev Gallery-Workshop
Vyacheslav Zaitsev's Gallery-Workshop lifts the veil on the mystery of creativity. Here, it feels as if the artist left the workshop just a minute ago and left everything as it was. Only, it's all truly authentic. Vyacheslav creates his works right here and is often present in the gallery during open hours. So you can ask questions directly to the artist. Plus, the gallery-workshop always plays excellent music — Vyacheslav Zaitsev's personal vinyl collection.

Parks and Gardens
Lake Kaban
Lake Kaban comprises three bodies of water: Lower Kaban, Middle Kaban, and Upper Kaban. Not long ago, the embankment along the lake was reconstructed, where over thirty species of plants and trees (reeds, water lilies, willows, bird cherries, maples) were planted. At night, the lake is illuminated, and during the day, you can go boating or catamaranning here.

Black Lake Park
The park's name — «Black Lake» — comes from the body of water that used to be here. Now there is no lake as such, but there is a beautifully landscaped space with paths, benches, and cafes. The park features the so-called Arch of Lovers. Its acoustics are quite unusual: if two people whisper at opposite ends of the arch, they will still hear each other. It is believed that if a couple kisses here, their love will be strong and lasting.
Millennium Park of Kazan
Millennium Park, or «Millenium Park» as locals call it, is one of the most recently opened places. In 2005, in honor of the city's millennium, the park opened its gates to everyone. The central fountain here is shaped like a kazan — a cauldron in which food has long been cooked in Tatarstan. It's a must-visit spot for newlyweds: by tossing a coin into the fountain, they ensure their family happiness.
Religious Structures
Kul Sharif Mosque
Built in the early 2000s, the Kul Sharif Mosque, despite being a modern construction, quickly became the true heart of the city and is now featured on all tourist postcards. The newly rebuilt structure was named in honor of the city's defender — Imam Kul Sharif, a Tatar national hero who participated in the defense of Kazan.
The mosque is faced with white marble, and its domes and spires are bright blue. At night, the building is illuminated — be sure to visit at this time of day. And step inside to admire the stained glass, stucco, wood carvings, and a chandelier made of colored crystal in the prayer hall.

Temple of All Religions
The Temple of All Religions is the only place in the world dedicated to several religions simultaneously. No services are held here, but originally the structure was conceived as a special space where people of different faiths could pray together. The building looks unusual and whimsical; the project is still unfinished, but a gallery and a concert hall are already open inside.
Annunciation Cathedral
The Annunciation Cathedral was built as a copy of the Assumption Cathedral, located on the territory of the Moscow Kremlin. However, the temple was rebuilt and restored many times, so little resemblance remains. During the tour, you will definitely be told that many famous people attended liturgy here — from Alexander Pushkin and Sergei Rachmaninoff to Catherine II and Peter the Great.
Entertainment and Active Recreation
Rope Park «Pautina»
Kazan's largest rope park is «Pautina». The description on the park's website states that it has no analogues in Russia. We invite you to verify this claim! Especially since it offers a huge number of complex routes, zip-lines, zip-bikes, and so on, for every taste and age.

Water Cruises «Parusa»
You can take a ride on boats, launches, or cruise ships along the Volga and Kama rivers in Kazan with the company «Parusa». These guys know their business and have event managers on their team to organize celebrations on a boat (from bachelorette parties to graduations). Additionally, you can rent a boat for fishing or take a yachting lesson. A completely new perspective on Kazan and its surroundings is guaranteed.
Aerial Tours
Letai s nami Aeroclub offers aerial tours of varying durations and costs. You can see all of Kazan, Kamskoye Ustye, Ancient Bolgar, and much more from a bird's-eye view. The plane accommodates one to three people — the whole group will see this beauty.
Beautiful Places in the Vicinity of Kazan
What to see in Kazan in three days: the best places in the city's surroundings, once all museums and local attractions have been visited a second time.
Island-Town Sviyazhsk
Sviyazhsk remains one of the most popular destinations in the vicinity of Kazan. It is an entire town, preserved on an island since the 16th century. Cathedrals, churches, bell towers — all of this constitutes a stunning historical and architectural complex. The island constantly hosts theatrical performances, music festivals, and other celebrations. You can view the schedule on the website.

Blue Lakes
Just ten kilometers from Kazan lies a true natural wonder — the Blue Lakes. Three lakes — Big Blue, Small Blue, and Flowing — have crystal clear blue water with healing properties, through which you can see 40 meters ahead. Each of them has a different depth, with the average depth of Big Blue Lake being three meters.
On the shores of the reservoirs, there are changing cabins and minimal infrastructure for vacationers. Throughout the year, the water temperature here does not rise above +6 degrees Celsius. Active recreation enthusiasts are also regulars here: diving in Big Blue Lake thrives (especially in summer). In short, everyone will find something to their liking at the Blue Lakes.

Where to Go with Kids
If you've already visited the Chak-Chak Museum and architecture isn't too interesting for your child — here's a list of what to see in Kazan with kids.
Riviera Aquapark
On the banks of the Kazanka River is one of Russia's largest water parks — «Riviera». Over 50 slides and attractions, a spa, and a huge wave pool await guests. The aquapark is part of a hotel and entertainment complex, so there's always the option to book a room right here and come swimming every day. Additionally, the complex has everything needed for a family vacation: food and drinks, towel rentals, and medical staff.
Children's Park «Kaleidoscope»
This park existed since the Soviet Union and was reconstructed in 2017. Now «Kaleidoscope» is a large collection of playgrounds for children of different ages: from 0 to 4 years old, from 4 to 12, and older. Self-Guided Itinerary for Kazan in One Day
If you're coming for just one day and wondering where to go in Kazan, don't worry: the main attractions will definitely fit into your schedule. We offer two routes to choose from.
Independently explore the Kazan Kremlin, on whose territory the main monuments related to the city's history are gathered. First, visit the white Kul Sharif Mosque, and then walk two hundred meters to the Annunciation Cathedral — the city's main Orthodox shrine, which Russian emperors once visited.
After lunch, go for a walk along the Kremlin Embankment and don't forget to take a look at the Palace of Farmers. We recommend watching the sunset from the Millennium Bridge, which somewhat resembles the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Then head to a cozy restaurant with national cuisine, and after that — relax at your hotel.

2. «Local Wonders» — an option to explore the local peculiarities of Tatarstan.
Spend the first part of the day in the Old Tatar Settlement: admire the ancient mosques, rich mansions, and try the national honey delicacy at the Chak-Chak Museum, not forgetting to grab a few packages as gifts for friends.

In the evening, you can go to «Tugan Avylym», choose a wooden ornament made by local craftsmen, and taste Tatar pancakes. Or take a bar tour on Baumana Street — the city's main street.

Thus, we have solved the problem of «what to see in Kazan for an independent tourist». Q.E.D.
Food and Restaurants
In the capital of Tatarstan, almost every restaurant is a collection of local cuisine. We've compiled a list of top places for tourists to visit in Kazan.
«Tyubetey»
Almost like «Vkusno i tochka», but the fast food is Tatar, not American. Low prices, fast service, and most importantly — traditional Tatar cuisine (gubadiya, kystybyi, echpochmak). The establishments are located in the very center, near the city's main attractions.
«Duck in a Cauldron»
A restaurant where you can try nomadic food: stewed horse meat with vegetables, heart, liver, and tokmach (Tatar-style noodle soup). They also serve duck in various forms — duck with apple croissant is considered a hit.
Bar «Sol»
One of the trendiest places in Kazan that tourists definitely visit — with a summer veranda, pleasant music, and champagne. Parties are regularly held here, wine flows freely, and the menu offers sandwiches, burgers, Italian cuisine, and soups.

«Chirem»
A good Tatar cuisine restaurant — not too budget-friendly, but perfectly suited for a relaxed lunch or dinner with family when you want good service and a cozy interior. From the food, you should try yantyk from spelt, manti with veal, closed pies with chicken and veal fillings, and local sweets — fried honey brushwood and stewed village cottage cheese.
Where to Stay
If you are traveling to Kazan as a tourist, we recommend choosing one of these areas:
- Vakhitovsky. This is the very heart of the city — the Kazan Kremlin, Kul Sharif Mosque, and Suyumbike Tower are located here. There are many expensive hotels here — but budget options can also be found. Among the most popular hotels are DoubleTree by Hilton 4* and Courtyard by Marriott 4*.
- Novo-Savinovsky. This district is considered a business area. From here, it's easy to get to the historical center — both by public transport and by taxi. Nearby is a beautiful embankment with bike paths. And also the «Riviera» entertainment complex with a water park.
Once the area is chosen, it's a small matter: go to accommodation search services like Sutochno.ru or Ostrovok. Find a suitable option and book it. You are magnificent!
What Souvenirs to Bring
We've compiled a list of gifts for friends and family that can only be brought from Kazan:
- of course, chak-chak. Fresh and melt-in-your-mouth, it's sold on every corner;
- a tubeteika — a headwear known throughout Tatarstan;
- horse meat sausage or canned horse meat. An acquired taste, we understand, but you won't know until you try;
- anything with Zilant. Zilant — a dragon-like winged serpent — is the symbol of Kazan. Keychains, magnets, and postcards with it are available in any souvenir shop;
- local balm made from herbs and berries — «Bugulma».
When to Go
The optimal time for a trip to Kazan is from mid-May to mid-September. In May, everything gradually starts to turn green, and the air gets warmer day by day, plus there aren't too many tourists.
In summer, the average air temperature is 24 degrees Celsius, but there are also hot days with temperatures of +30 degrees Celsius. The rainiest and hottest month is July. If you don't like the heat and prefer cooler weather, come in May or September. During this time, the tourist season is not in full swing, and the weather is comfortable.

Tips for Travelers
- Tatarstan is a country of friendly people. If you wish to please them in return, you can learn a couple of phrases in Tatar. For example, «hello» = «сәлам» or «thank you» = «рәхмәт»;
- Kazan is considered one of the safest cities in Russia, but we do not recommend appearing after dark on the outskirts (for example, in the Privolzhsky district);
- when visiting cathedrals, temples, and mosques, observe dress code rules: your head should be covered (and legs too);
- go to Baumana Street on a weekday if possible: on weekends, it's full of tourists, and with them, queues;
- do not swim in the Kazanka (local river): there is an opinion about industrial waste being discharged into it. There are no facts, but we really don't want to check;
- take sunscreen and a panama hat with you.
Open your heart to Kazan, and it will open to you!
