What to do if your flight is canceled at the airport
A traveler's nightmare scenario: you're calmly finishing your latte, anticipating your vacation, when suddenly the departure board turns red and your phone buzzes with notifications. Flight canceled. Panic is a bad ally, so act clearly and systematically.
If you were just about to buy tickets to Yerevan on Kupi.com or already hold a boarding pass for tickets to Tashkent, this guide will help you navigate the terminal and protect your rights.

Don't rush to the general queue (immediately)
Every passenger's first instinct is to run to the check-in counter and sort things out with an airline representative. As a result, a line of two hundred angry people instantly forms, and you risk spending several hours in it.
Use your phone. While you're in line (if you decide to join it), call the airline's hotline or write to support chat. Often, a call center operator or app support can rebook you on another flight faster than an agent at the airport.
Check your mobile app and email. Many modern airlines automatically send flight options or a link to a new flight selection form when a flight is canceled. All you have to do is click "Confirm".
Look for alternatives yourself. Go to the airline's website and see if there are seats available on upcoming flights to your destination. If you find a specific option, it will be easier and faster for the agent at the counter to rebook you.
Find out the official reason for the cancellation
Your benefits and the possibility of receiving monetary compensation depend on why the plane isn't flying.
Airline's fault: technical malfunction, crew shortage, delay of a previous flight due to the carrier's fault. In this case, you are entitled to a full range of care and, in some countries (e.g., EU or Turkey), substantial monetary compensation.
Force majeure: bad weather, air traffic controller strikes, airspace closure, natural disasters. Here, the carrier's obligations are more modest, but basic care (water, food, and communication) must still be provided.
Demand what is due by law (FAP No. 82)
In Russia, passenger rights are regulated by Federal Aviation Rules. Even if you fly with a budget low-cost carrier, the rules are the same for everyone. If the wait is prolonged:
Immediately after cancellation: baggage storage must be arranged for you. Also, if you are traveling with a child under seven, you must be provided access to a mother and child room.
After 2 hours: you must be provided with refreshing drinks and the opportunity to make two phone calls or send an email.
After 4 hours: hot meals. Thereafter, they must be provided every 6 hours during the day and every 8 hours at night.
After 8 hours during the day (or 6 hours at night): hotel accommodation and free transfer to and from it.
Practical tip: if the airline is inactive and refuses to provide a hotel, you can book it yourself. Choose a mid-range option, be sure to keep the contract and cash receipt. After the trip, you can bill the carrier.

Decide: fly or get a refund
You always have two legal options, and the choice is yours, not the airline's:
Alternative route. The airline must send you on the next available flight (its own or partners') without any additional charges. If the proposed option includes a layover instead of a direct flight, you have the right to agree to it or demand another option.
Full refund. If the proposed option does not suit you (for example, you were flying to a friend's wedding that will already be over), you are entitled to a "forced refund". The money must be returned in full, even if the fare was "non-refundable".
Gather evidence for compensation
To avoid having to prove later that you didn't "just miss" your flight, document every step:
Get a stamp. Find an airline representative or information desk and ask them to stamp your boarding pass or itinerary with a flight cancellation or delay mark. Photograph it immediately.
Take a screenshot of the board. A photo of the departure board showing your flight with "Cancelled" status will be an excellent addition to your claim.
Collect receipts. Coffee, sandwiches, luggage storage, taxi to the hotel – if the airline did not provide you with what was necessary, keep all paper confirmations of expenses. Electronic bank statements are not always accepted by company lawyers as sufficient proof.
What to do with luggage?
If you have already checked in your suitcases, they should be returned to the baggage claim area. Check with staff if you need to pick up your belongings. If you are provided with another flight in a few hours, your luggage may remain in the airport system and "fly" with you automatically, but this needs to be confirmed with an airline representative.
Remember: a flight cancellation is not the end of your journey, but merely an unplanned turn. Stay calm, finish your coffee, and methodically follow the points above. As practice shows, a polite but rights-aware passenger is the first to fly.
