How to get to Kostroma
January weekends are made for finding yourself in a winter fairy tale, and there's no better place for it than Kostroma. After all, it's here, in her official residence, that Snegurochka lives. Snow-covered market rows, troika rides, hot sbiten, and the cozy atmosphere of an ancient Russian city – an ideal scenario for the start of the year. Only one question remains: how to get to this winter idyll? Kostroma is located approximately 340 km from the capital, and the journey here can become a pleasant part of your small trip.

By train
This is the most popular and reliable option for a winter trip. The railway will save you from worrying about ice on the road or multi-hour traffic jams when leaving the city.
- : the fastest way is the high-speed electric train “Lastochka”. It departs from Yaroslavsky railway station and will get you there in just 4 hours. This is the optimal balance of price and comfort. However, on holidays, demand is huge, so it's worth buying tickets to Kostroma in advance, as soon as sales open. Classic overnight trains also run: you board the carriage in the evening, and in the morning, after a good night's sleep, you're already strolling along the Volga embankment.
- : direct trains connect the northern capital with Kostroma. This is a convenient overnight journey. If you are planning a vacation, look for St. Petersburg – Kostroma tickets in advance: this destination is very popular among those who want to exchange St. Petersburg's dampness for real Russian frost and sun.
By bus
A budget option for those who didn't manage to get seats on the train. Buses depart regularly (usually from the Central Bus Station at “Shchyolkovskaya” or the “Severnye Vorota” Bus Station).
Travel time ranges from 5 to 7 hours. In winter, this range is especially relevant: snowfalls and heavy traffic in the Yaroslavl area can increase travel time. Buses arrive at the Kostroma bus station, which is a bit far from the historical center, so immediately factor in taxi costs to your hotel.

By car
A trip by personal car offers freedom and the opportunity to turn the transfer into a full-fledged grand tour of the Golden Ring. The route follows the federal highway M-8 “Kholmogory”. This is one of the best roads in this direction, with high-quality pavement and lighting in many sections.
The route passes through true historical gems: Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov Veliky, and Yaroslavl. You can make stops, drink coffee with a view of the Kremlin walls, and take your time.
Important nuances for January:
- Consider the short daylight hours: it's better to leave early in the morning to cover most of the journey in daylight.
- Be prepared for winter conditions: snowdrifts are possible on open sections of the highway, and streets in cities may be narrowed due to snowdrifts.
- Distance – about 340 km, pure travel time without stops – about 5 hours.
Whichever method you choose, Kostroma is worth the journey. The hospitality of Snegurochka's homeland will warm you even in the strongest January frosts.
