Elbrus: what you need to know before your trip
Elbrus needs no introduction. This famous stratovolcano still gathers crowds of fans: some enjoy its photos, while others dream of conquering its peak. If you are one of those brave souls, save this article for the future.
We've gathered all the essential life hacks for seasoned travelers and are ready to share them with you. Interested? Then let's go!

Where is Mount Elbrus located
Let's start with the basics: the location of Elbrus. Roughly speaking, it is located in the Caucasus. That is, in the south of Russia.
Now more specifically: Elbrus is located on the border of the Kabardino-Balkarian and Karachay-Cherkessian republics. The nearest cities — Nalchik, Mineralnye Vody, and Pyatigorsk. It is from there that tourists most often begin their journey into the mountains.
How to get there
The route to the stratovolcano has deterred many a traveler. After all, the final destination is far away, and there are no clear guides on how to get there. To make it easier and ensure you don't get confused, we've prepared a small step-by-step guide on how to get to Elbrus.
First step — buy a flight ticket to Mineralnye Vody or Nalchik. Firstly, it's easier, and secondly, not as expensive (you can fly for just 5,000–7,000 rubles).
An alternative option is to get to Pyatigorsk, but by train. In this case, prepare in advance: take an interesting book or download a new series. After all, the journey from the capital will take more than 24 hours, which is a good test of gadget dependency: the internet along the way will be intermittent.
Second step is up to you:
- by electric train. This is the most popular way to leave Nalchik or Mineralnye Vody airport. Fortunately, marshrutka No. 11 goes to the railway station. Train tickets to Pyatigorsk or Kislovodsk are inexpensive: around 250 rubles;
- by taxi. The same scheme as in the previous option: take a taxi to the station, and then by train to one of the destinations.
Most excursions start from Pyatigorsk and Kislovodsk. However, if you want to travel independently, we recommend booking a transfer in advance. In that case, you will go directly from Mineralnye Vody to the foot of the mountains.

Weather on Elbrus
The most popular time to visit Elbrus is January and February. Frosts are guaranteed then. Towards the end of autumn and beginning of spring, the air here is warmer, and skiing is unlikely to be possible.
When is the best time to go
It depends on what you want to do on Elbrus. If you want to go up the mountain by funicular and take photos of alpine meadows, then you should go in summer. Winter is an excellent time to visit the ski resorts of Prielbrusye.
In general, think in advance about the purpose of your trip, and then proceed with planning. By the way, if you plan everything in advance, you can buy tickets at the most pleasant price. In short, everyone benefits: both you and your wallet.

Where to stay
Admit it, the most pleasant thing is to return to your hotel room after a long walk, look at new photos in your gallery, and show them off to friends. To make your stay even more comfortable, we offer several accommodation options. Choose at your discretion.
More expensive, but convenient
Azau and Cheget glades — just a ten-minute walk to the cable car. Good infrastructure and ski equipment rental points.
Something in between
Terskol village — comfortable and has infrastructure. You'll have to walk 15–30 minutes to the cable car.
Cheap and furthest from Elbrus
Baidaevo or Tegenekli — here are the cheapest hotels, but you will need to drive to the slopes. By the way, there's a very small selection of places for lunch and dinner here.
Ascending Elbrus
Although it's a simple truth, it's worth repeating: ascending any mountain peak is a huge stress for your body, requiring not only moral but also physical preparation. Therefore, there's no better option than to climb Elbrus with a guide.
An experienced person will help you properly go through the acclimatization period. That is, they will prepare you for upcoming changes in pressure and temperature. Do not neglect warm clothing and do not skimp on equipment.
Beginners are advised to make their way through the "Peak Terskol" observatory. More experienced climbers start from the south. There lies the most beautiful route through the Azau resort, "Mir" station, and "Gara-Bashi" tourist base (known as "Boсhki" due to the unusual shape of the rest houses). In both cases, the summit is reached in two ways: some on foot, and some by snowcat.
To summarize, the ascent can take anywhere from a few hours to several days — it all depends on the group's pace.

Regarding what to take with you to Elbrus, worry about it in advance. Then there will be no unnecessary panic during packing, and you'll have time to think. For convenience, here's a list of the essentials:
- trekking boots (preferably well broken in. Blisters are not the most pleasant addition to an ascent);
- thermal underwear;
- fleece jacket, pants, and hat;
- hiking pants for acclimatization (with light wind and moisture protection);
- sneakers;
- change of underwear and t-shirts;
- 75-liter backpack;
- special sunglasses;
- headlamp;
- power bank and chargers;
- water flask;
- thermos;
- three pairs of special socks (they are needed to prevent chafing);
- dishes (bowl, mug, spoon).
By the way, bulky equipment can be rented. Here's an example of what you can get on site:
- tent;
- sleeping bag;
- inflatable mat;
- membrane jacket and pants;
- down jacket and pants;
- 40-liter assault backpack;
- ski mask;
- ice axe;
- harness;
- boots;
- gaiters for snow protection.
Prielbrusye Resorts
There are two resorts in Prielbrusye — "Elbrus" and "Cheget". "Cheget" is considered a resort with extreme slopes for professionals who have been skiing for a long time, while "Elbrus" is more suitable for beginners. Without further ado, let's figure it out.
"Cheget"
The slopes of «Cheget» impress with their variety: there are picturesque, short, and extreme ones... In general, there are many options — choose to your taste.
Due to the rather steep descent, the ski resort is suitable for experienced riders. Keep this in mind before your trip.

"Elbrus"
«Elbrus» is not inferior to «Cheget» in terms of slope variety. Its advantage is more options for beginners. However, this does not mean that there are no slopes for professionals — on the contrary, there are many of them here too.
By the way, various holidays are often held and flash mobs are organized on the territory of the ski resort.

Places of Elbrus: what to see
Prielbrusye is much more interesting than it seems at first glance. There aren't just ski resorts in the area! Here are options for interesting places you can see on Elbrus.
"Peak Terskol" Observatory
A great opportunity to get acquainted with the stars is to go to "Peak Terskol". This is an observatory at an altitude of 3,000 meters, from where daily observations of the physical properties of celestial bodies are conducted.
Alas, it is impossible to get inside: entry is prohibited to outsiders. But you can look at the enchanting landscapes, and in the evening admire the clear starry sky.

Dzhily-Su Tract
Happiness is not beyond the mountains, it's right in the mountains! Therefore, travelers often go to see the landscapes of Kabardino-Balkaria in the Dzhily-Su tract. Wonders will meet you at the very beginning of the journey: if the weather is clear and the peak of Elbrus is not hidden behind the clouds — a simply magnificent view opens up.
No photo or video can convey the full beauty of the tract. Therefore, do not postpone a trip there if you find yourself in Prielbrusye.
Blue Lakes
According to legend, a long-defeated dragon lies at the bottom of the blue lakes of Prielbrusye, whose tears fill the reservoirs and give them an unusual hue.
Well, if we put mysticism aside, there's too high a concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the water. So, while everyone around says it's Photoshop, we suggest you go and see for yourself what beauty nature can create.

Ways to experience Elbrus
Excursions
The most proven way to learn something new is to sign up for an excursion. Fortunately, there are many guides who want to tell you about local legends and show picturesque landscapes.
The advantages of excursions include minimal hassle. You won't have to think about how to get to a specific point or search the internet for information no one has looked for before you. Professionals will do everything, and all that will be required of you is your presence and money.
Hiking
Hikes help you relax from the city bustle and feel at one with nature. Of course — there will be no internet here, but there will be new impressions and emotions.
Especially often, trekking tours are conducted in Prielbrusye: you meet with a group at a designated point and explore new locations with an organizer. Another option is to go hiking with friends. Just be sure to note that there should be someone among you who has thoroughly studied the route.

Now you know a little more about Elbrus. We advise you to reinforce theoretical knowledge with practice and go conquer the mountains. Good luck!
