Curonian Spit: What to See
We're not hinting at anything, but to see the wonders of nature, you don't always need a visa and a foreign passport. Sometimes it's enough to just come to the Kaliningrad region. There you'll find one of Russia's coolest locations — the Curonian Spit. Just imagine: practically untouched Baltic nature, huge sand dunes, dancing pines, and the sound of waves. How do you like that for travel company? We like it, so we're sharing the ins and outs of the Curonian Spit with you.

Curonian Spit: Features, Location
What exactly is this spit? It's a unique natural phenomenon (it's no coincidence that the Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage site). Just imagine: a narrow strip of sand, ranging from 350 meters to 3.8 kilometers wide, stretches right in the middle of the sea. On one side, the spit is washed by the Baltic Sea, and on the other, by the Curonian Lagoon. So there's water on both the right and left. But on the sandy spit itself, life is bustling: rare animals and birds live here, trees dance, and dunes shift. Cool, right?
Interesting fact: The Curonian Spit, as a UNESCO site, belongs to two countries simultaneously — Russia and Lithuania. This is because it stretches for 98 kilometers, 48 of which belong to Russia, and 50 to Lithuania. Here's a life hack on how to see the Curonian Spit from above: choose a window seat on the plane. The narrow sandy strip is visible even on approach to Kaliningrad.
How to Get There
Since we're planning a trip without a foreign passport or visa, we're interested in the Russian 48 kilometers of the spit. Getting there isn't too difficult. First, you need to fly to the former Königsberg. A flight to Kaliningrad will take about two and a half hours and cost 4,000–6,000 rubles. As for the ticket price to Kaliningrad, it will cost 3,000–5,000 rubles, with a travel time of about two hours.
By the way, you can dedicate a day to Königsberg itself. We even have a whole list of what to see in Kaliningrad. The city is very cozy and atmospheric, so we recommend staying there for a while.
After a walk around Kaliningrad, you can head to Zelenogradsk. This is a small coastal town in the region, next to which a nature reserve is located. In fact, there's an easy option: take an excursion in Kaliningrad. There are many offers where you can see the main attractions of the spit and listen to guides in one day. But for those who like to travel at their own pace, it's better to first come to Zelenogradsk. Buses and electric trains run from Kaliningrad, so you can get there quickly and easily.
The question “How to get to the Curonian Spit from Zelenogradsk?” is a bit more complicated. There are several options:
- You can take regular bus 210, which stops at specific points on the spit. But in this case, you'll have to walk a lot and adjust to the bus schedule.
- You can use a taxi. But keep in mind: visiting the Curonian Spit is paid, and you'll need to buy a ticket for the driver too. Plus, a taxi will be more expensive, although it's much more comfortable than a bus.
- If you have a driver's license, the easiest way is to rent a car. There are many rental services in both Kaliningrad and Zelenogradsk. The choice of cars is also wide: for every taste and budget. A small tip from us: just in case, check if the car has a tow rope.
Regarding payment: if you visit the reserve on foot (or by regular bus), it will cost 300 rubles per person. If you go by car (or taxi), it's an additional 150 rubles per vehicle.
What to See
In addition to being considered the largest spit in the world by area, the Curonian Spit also boasts unique nature. It has everything: pine forests, sand dunes, swamps, and a sea coast. In short, there's definitely something to see. We'll tell you about just a few locations that are worth marking on your map and definitely visiting.
Dancing Forest
Want to see trees dance? Then you absolutely must visit the Curonian Spit. This is one of the very first locations after entering the reserve. In reality, although the place is called a forest, it's a small area with coniferous trees of whimsical shapes. Their trunks are bent and tilted in different directions. This creates the impression that the pines are dancing.
It's curious that scientists still haven't reached a consensus on what caused the trunks to change shape. Some believe it's due to caterpillars that damaged the apical buds, and this is the result. Others suggest that it's all about the climate and strong winds that altered the direction of tree growth. In general, there are as many opinions as there are people. So, choose your favorite version and share it with others.
The only thing scientists and tour guides agree on is asking tourists to be careful. Don't climb on the trees just for another photo: it can harm the trunks. And don't tear off pieces of bark as souvenirs either. This is a nature reserve, after all. Plus, it's in our own interest to preserve this beautiful and unique place.

Efa Dune
Efa Dune is the highest point of the Curonian Lagoon, rising 62 meters above sea level. The location is named after dune inspector Franz Efa. In his time, he studied and stabilized shifting sands. In fact, thanks to him, the Curonian Spit became greener. At Efa's height (dune), there are three observation decks from which all the landscapes of the spit are visible: the sea, the lagoon, sands, and forest. And you can also get simply incredible photos there.
For walks around the location, there is an equipped eco-trail in the form of a wooden boardwalk. Walking on the dune itself (read: sand) is prohibited.

Ornithological Station "Fringilla"
So, let's continue talking about the uniqueness of the Curonian Spit: bird migration routes pass through it. Annually, over two hundred different species of birds fly through these places. This doesn't even count those who live here. In the vicinity of the station, you can see traps designed for catching birds. But don't panic: there's nothing inhumane about it. Birds are simply ringed and released. This is done to track migration routes.
The local ornithological station was established over 100 years ago and is still operating. By the way, tourists can also visit it.
Müller's Height
This is the highest point of the largest dune near the village of Rybachy. Müller's Height is located in a beautiful place with the not-so-poetic name "Swamp Dune". Previously, it was known as Bruchberg Dune (sounds more aristocratic, wouldn't you agree?).
The place is very picturesque. A path framed by giant ancient spruces leads to Müller's Height. Then you'll need to climb up a wooden staircase with handrails. But the entire journey is worth it: the view from the top is incredible.
Royal Forest
Here, the name speaks for itself. Once upon a time, Prussian King Frederick William I loved to spend time in these parts. Even then, the spit was gradually turning into a nature reserve. And one of the forest areas with ancient trees was named the Royal Forest in memory of those distant times. Seriously, coniferous trees planted in the distant 17th century still grow there.
The main treasure of the Royal Forest is an ancient giant thuja. A special path has now been laid to it, and the tree itself is protected by a fence.
Lake Chaika
A favorite resting place for tourists who come to the spit for an overnight stay. This is the national park's second body of water where you can pitch tents, grill shashlik, and have picnics. There's free parking here, and the shore is equipped with barbecues, benches, and wooden tables. The main rule: clean up after yourself.
As for nature, Lake Chaika is the largest freshwater body in the reserve. Entire families of ducks, cormorants, and swans live here.
Lake Lebed
Another beautiful and unique location on the Curonian Spit. Without getting too pedantic or delving into geological details, one could say that the lake appeared recently and for unknown reasons. And it doesn't matter how it appeared here; what's more important is who lives here. Mute swans, mallards, and grey herons inhabit the lake. They pay little attention to people. So you can observe the birds calmly and without hesitation. However, feeding them is prohibited.
The place is very beautiful: the lake is surrounded by alder trees. However, descending to the water is prohibited. This is because it could cause damage to special man-made structures built to protect the lake's shores. And we don't want that.
These are the main locations on the Curonian Spit that we recommend seeing. Believe us, every place here is unique and worth your attention.
Curonian Spit: Where to Stay
There are several accommodation options, depending on how, when, and from where you decide to go to the reserve.
For example, you can stay in Kaliningrad. Hotels and apartments here cost from 2,000 rubles per night.
There's an option to spend the night in Zelenogradsk, and in the morning, take a car and go explore the Curonian Spit. Accommodation in this resort town will cost around 3,000 rubles per night for small apartments. For a better room during the season, you'll have to pay 5,000–6,000 rubles per night.

You can also stay overnight or even for several days within the national park itself. All conditions are available for this: tourist bases, hotels, campsites, and glampings. Here are a few options for those who want to be closer to nature.
- Glamping "Polyana" in Lesnoy village
Imagine a huge open-air tent right on the Curonian Spit — sounds cool already. Well, that's Glamping "Polyana". Inside the tent, there's comfortable Scandinavian-style furniture, a heated king-size bed, and cozy lanterns. Outside — the sound of the sea, pines, and fresh air. Each such room has its own terrace. So you can drink coffee at dawn with a magnificent view. A night in such a tent costs from 12,000 rubles. - Glamping "Kurshale" in Lesnoy village
A perfectly located spot for relaxation. Small, cozy houses are just 450 meters from the seashore, on the bank of the Curonian Lagoon. Inside, they are equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay. If you want to be even closer to nature, you can come here with your own tent. As for the price, accommodation in a double room costs from 4,750 rubles per night. - Ecopark "Turbaza Dyuny" in Lesnoy village
This, for a moment, is the oldest tourist base on the Curonian Spit. It can be considered a symbol of eco-friendly recreation in the reserve. Tourists are offered small one-story and two-story houses right in the pine forest with access to the lagoon just 100 meters from the tourist base. The territory has a children's playground, a promenade, and a barbecue area. Plus, all conditions are created for healthy and active recreation not only in summer but also in winter. You can rent a small double "economy" room from 1,600 rubles per night.
Alternatively, you can rent apartments or even a house (if you're traveling with a large group) in one of the villages on the Curonian Spit. The choice here is good, so base it on your preferences and budget.
Where to Eat
What traveler doesn't love delicious food? Right, a full one. And for everyone else — this section of the article. Of course, it's worth understanding that there are no Michelin-starred restaurants on the Curonian Spit, but there are authentic and pleasant establishments with a marine theme.
For example, in Lesnoy village, you can visit "Dom Rybolova" (Fisherman's House) to try their pike-perch. Or a small cozy cafe "Mayak" (Lighthouse) for a borsch or royal-style fish soup.
In Rybachy village, seafood lovers should check out Fischhoff. By the way, there's a market next to the restaurant where you can buy fish and shashlik sets.
If you stop by Morskoye village, we recommend VinLand cafe, located at the very top of a dune, very close to Efa's Height. It has a cozy veranda, so lunch with a stunning view is guaranteed. True, the selection of dishes here is small, but you can see the sea from the window.
In general, there are many so-called "islands" and stalls on the Curonian Spit where you can grab coffee or tea with a bun. So you definitely won't go hungry there.
So, this is a weekend plan for those who want to be closer to nature. For those who just want to relax, we also have an idea: you can go try Russia's thermal springs. In general, choose the vacation that suits you best and go travel!
